One dispatched zombie later, I stood outside the morgue yet again, watching the officers carry Marilyn’s body inside. I’d dealt with her zombie in the same way as the others, and she hadn’t put up too much of a fight, but I still felt I’d let her down by not finding her sooner.

I released a sigh. “So, which of us is going to break the bad news to Jennifer Ness?”

“I will,” Drew said. “This is going to make things difficult with the coven, I expect, but she won’t be able to deny that we’re looking at the work of a dangerous magical killer.”

“Assuming she isn’t part of it herself.” Regardless, Mr Cogman’s revelation had thrown a wrench in our attempts to find a clue leading to the killer’s location. “I’ll see if Marilyn’s ghost shows up and sheds some light on whereabouts she was killed. Though if she was wandering the street as a zombie, you’d think someone would have spotted her before she reached the high street.”

“It’s hard to tell a zombie from a regular person unless you see them close up,” he said. “That’s what has my officers so rattled. I expect I’ll be dealing with excuses and false alarms for the foreseeable future, or at least until this case is dealt with.”

“Fun.” I looked up at the darkening sky. “I need to head back to the inn. I can try to wrangle some more answers from Mr Cogman.”

“He claims someone hit him on the head from behind, did he?” Drew said. “The autopsy will be able to back up his claim, or otherwise.”

“When’s that?”

“It’s scheduled for tomorrow,” he said. “Marilyn and Tara will be examined, too, since their bodies had no marks on them.”

“That suggests they were both killed with magic.” Not Mr Cogman, though. The serial killer had broken the pattern with him, which implied he had no connection with the other murders at all—if he hadn’t also been turned into a zombie.

After parting ways with Drew, I walked back to the inn in a foul mood that only intensified when I found no signs of Mr Cogman’s spirit inside the restaurant. Our new ghostly employees all backed away when they saw me, so I attempted to tamp down my anger. Despite their fellow ghost’s behaviour, they hadn’t done anything wrong.

“Hey,” I said to them. “Have you seen Mr Cogman?”

“He went that way.” Jonathan pointed hesitantly through the doorway. “Is he going to stay here?”

“Until I find his killer,” I said. “Sorry if I freaked you out earlier. I thought he had information on a serial killer I’m searching for, and I was counting on his cooperation. You might have noticed he doesn’t have much of that going spare.”

“I’ll keep an eye out for him,” the ghost promised.

“Cheers.” I left their group and approached the bar, where Jia was chatting with Carey.

“Another zombie?” asked Carey.

“Yeah.” I slumped into a seat. “We were too late to save her, but we’d never have got to the killer’s hideout in time anyway.
